The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles

“The Science of Getting Rich” is a must-read. It’s packed with wisdom and advice on… well, how to become wealthy, but it’s actually a lot more than this. It’s about attracting in our lives everything that we want.

The book is very short too—only some 60 pages but I can’t say it’s an easy read or a page-turner. It makes you think, ponder on things, reflect on your life—what you want to achieve and the person you want to become.

For anyone who hasn’t read “The Secret” or watched the movie, the ideas in the book may seem a bit far-fetched, fairy-tale-y, in fact. But if you believe in the Law of Attraction, this book will strike a powerful chord with you. In fact, “The Secret” has its origins in this very book.

“The Science of Getting Rich” is written by Wallace Watters, an American New Thought writer. The New Thought Movement is a movement which started in the U.S. in the 19th century. It sources its principles from religion, metaphysics, the law of attraction, creative visualisation, and positive thinking. [1]

Th New Thought Movement is based on the unpublished teachings of Phineas Quimby, an American clockmaker, mentalist and healer. He believed that “illness originated in the mind as a consequence of erroneous beliefs and that a mind open to God’s wisdom could overcome any illness.

The main ideas in “The Science of Getting Rich” is largely based on this notion—that by acting in a Certain Way, starting to think and look at the world in a Certain Way, you will receive what you ask for. It will be created for you from the “Formless Substance.” Therefore, the book tells us,

You need not hesitate to ask largely.”

And further, the secret is unveiled:

“A thought, in this substance, Produces the thing that is imagined by the thought. Do not ask why these things are true, nor speculate as to how they can be true; simply take them on trust.

The science of getting rich begins with the absolute acceptance of this faith.”

Creative visualisation is another part of the process. We need to have

“FAITH, that the thing is already yours; that it is “at hand” and you have only to take possession of it. Live in the new house, mentally, until it takes forms around you physically. See the things you want as if they were actually around you all the time; see yourself as owning and using them.”

Quite an inspirational idea, isn’t it?

Another important element in the Science of Getting Rich is Gratitude. “Gratitude,” the book tells us, “brings your whole mind into closer harmony with the creative energies of the universe.” We need to be grateful in advance for the things we are about to be given.

The grateful mind is constantly fixed upon the best; therefore it tends to become the best; it takes the form or character of the best; and will receive the best.”

I found the book to be a rather fascinating read. It ultimately boils down to two things: Hope and Belief—the Hope that we can have the lives we dream of, and the Belief that it’s within our power to achieve it all.

Happy reading!
